Why Clients Choose Oceanlight Studios
A surprise proposal happens only once. My work begins before you arrive, with the planning and preparation that allow the moment itself to feel natural.
Personal planning and location guidance. I help you choose a setting that feels right for the two of you and plan around the light, privacy, weather, crowds, parking and permit requirements.
Discreet day-of coordination. We work through your arrival, where each of us will be and how I will photograph the proposal without revealing the surprise.
Documentary experience. With more than three decades of experience as a photojournalist, photographer and filmmaker, I know how to anticipate meaningful reactions without interrupting them.
Proposal photographs and engagement portraits. I photograph the proposal as it happens, followed by relaxed portraits while the emotion and excitement are still fresh.
Proof gallery within 24 hours. You can quickly relive the moment, share the news and select the photographs you would like fully edited.
Direct, personal communication. You work with me throughout the entire process—from our first conversation through planning, photography and gallery delivery.
The Proposal Process: What to Expect
1. Let’s Talk
Book a quick call so we can work through any of your questions together. Whether you’re a local or planning from afar, I’ll guide you through logistics, unexpected challenges (yes, we’ll talk about weather), and share insider tips to make sure everything flows smoothly. Need a vendor for an elaborate setup? I can point you in the right direction, but my focus is on capturing the real moments between you—not props.
2. Choose Your Proposal Location
Not sure where to propose? I’ll help you pick a spot that fits your vibe—whether it’s windswept bluffs, hidden urban corners, or golden-hour beaches so you can visualize how your moment will look. If you have a location in mind for your proposal, that is fantastic. I feel the best locations for proposals are the ones that you and your partner have some connection to or want to build a connection around. If you need help choosing a spot, there are so many gorgeous locations in the Southern California coast, from Cambria and Avila Beach to wine country, to Miramar Beach in Montecito and down the PCH into Los Angeles. There are so many landmarks, from Griffith Observatory to the Santa Monica Pier. This gorgeous state of California has every type of scenery to create a backdrop to provide a lifelong memory in photos for you and your partner.
3. Book your Proposal
Once you’re ready, reserve your proposal date and time. Weekday sessions often provide more privacy, but I also photograph proposals on weekends. If your plans change or weather becomes a concern, rescheduling may be possible when availability allows.
4. Stay in Touch
Leading up to the big day, you can text me anytime with questions or updates. Need to tweak the time or location? No problem. If we’re working in an area with low cell service, I’ll send detailed maps, parking instructions, and marked satellite images to ensure everything goes smoothly.
5. Send Me a Photo / Share Your Location
On the day of your proposal, send me a photo of the two of you so I know who to look for. If you have an iPhone, you can share your location through Find My, or we can use WhatsApp. Once you arrive, text me when you park so I know you are there. I will already be discreetly in position at least 30 minutes before your arrival.
6. Post-Proposal Engagement Session
After your proposal, we’ll do a post-proposal photo session together. No stiff posing, just relaxed, artistic portraits that reflect your connection. Sessions typically last 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the package you choose.
7. Gallery Delivery
Your online proof gallery will be delivered within 24 hours of the proposal. From there, you can select the photographs included with your collection. If you have a question about an image or would like an adjustment, just ask.

Proposal FAQs
-
Yes, I love helping plan surprise proposals! From scouting the perfect location to ensuring the lighting and angles are ideal, I’ll work with you to capture the photographs. I can also suggest vendors in the area for site preparation, picnics or styling.
-
Yes, I can suggest a lot of great proposal locations and Southern California offers countless picturesque spots. A good place to start is to think about locations that have some special connection for you, whether on the coast, in the forest or at a landmark. I have a map with many potential locations that I can make available to you.
-
I will create amazing photos of your proposal any time of the day. That said, since this is a photography session, the light during golden hour, which occurs for an hour after sunrise or before sunset, is softer and makes for dramatic images. The warm light during these times helps create stunning photos with natural highlights and shadows.
-
I suggest booking your proposal photography as soon as you know your date, or 4-6 weeks in advance, especially if you’re planning during peak seasons like spring or summer. This allows us enough time to coordinate details, scout locations, and ensure everything is perfect for your big moment. I do my best to accommodate last-minute proposals, so don’t hesitate to reach out.
